Word & reading-time counter

Count words, characters and lines, with an adjustable reading-time estimate.

How the count works.

Word boundaries use your browser’s English word segmentation, with a Unicode-aware fallback. Counts may differ from other editors. Characters count Unicode code points, so an emoji made from several code points can count as more than one character.

Whitespace is excluded from the no-spaces count. A line break starts a new line; one or more blank lines separate paragraphs. Reading time is words ÷ reading speed, rounded up to the next second. The default 200 words per minute is an editable assumption.
