Resistor color-code decoder

Read a conventional 4-, 5- or 6-band axial resistor code.

How this tool works

Four bands use two significant digits, a multiplier and tolerance. Five bands use three significant digits. Six add a temperature coefficient in ppm/°C. Brown · black · red · gold means 10 × 100 = 1,000 Ω, ±5%, with a nominal tolerance interval of 950–1,050 Ω.

Read from the significant-digit end; spacing often distinguishes the tolerance band. Faded colors, reversed orientation and special-purpose parts can mislead. Confirm uncertain parts with their datasheet or a suitable measurement. The illustration is original; factual code values follow Vishay’s color-code reference. Tolerance endpoints are nominal arithmetic, not a temperature model or measurement.
